wow...what a mixed up world we live in....
Today at work...45 yr man with no spontaneous respiration's.....
We bagged and bagged then we intubated, and we got him to the fixed wing ambulance..............Off to the city our patient went.....

We (Two ambulance crews) went out to have a bite.....
I ate and ate and then ran home to purge.............
How ironic......I help to save a life and then run home to risk mine........

It is amazing how as healthcare workers we risk our lives more than our patients, wether its for beauty, or just get that feeling of complete freedom. We work so hard only to break ourselves. Many others will never know what we feel!!

you are right.......
our man had fixed and dilated pupils when we flew him out.....
he is brain dead....so very sad...3 children asked me if they could kiss him while I bagged...
my heart broke........

I just found your blog, and wow. I really do KNOW what you are feeling in this situation. I am an EMT-I and I was a medic in the Army, and while I was saving lives, I was taking my own. I remember so many days shoving my face in the back of my ambulance. Thanks for sharing, I feel a little less... odd?

The irony is terrible. I especially hate my double standards when I have yelled at my daughters to eat the home-made meals I prepare for them each night...and then go and throw mine up, or worse still, pick at them listlessly in front of them.

Perhaps, in my case, though, it's not irony - just hypocrisy...
